Senate Archives Impeachment Case Against Sara Duterte
MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has officially archived the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, shifting the spotlight to the legal team’s next steps. Her defense lawyers are now focusing on responding to the Supreme Court’s order to submit a comment on a pending motion that seeks to overturn the ruling declaring the impeachment complaint unconstitutional.
“The defense team acknowledges the Senate’s decision to adhere to the Supreme Court ruling and archive the articles of impeachment,” said Michael Poa, one of Duterte’s defense counsels and her impeachment spokesperson, on Wednesday. “Our focus now remains on submitting our comment, in compliance with the High Court’s order.”
Senate Archives Impeachment Case Amid Supreme Court Review
The Senate’s move to archive the impeachment case came as an amendment to Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s initial proposal to dismiss the case altogether, following the Supreme Court’s declaration that the complaint was unconstitutional. This decision aligns the Senate’s actions with the High Court’s ruling.
However, the matter is far from settled. The Supreme Court is still reviewing the case, as the House of Representatives filed a 70-page motion for reconsideration. This motion aims to reverse the Court’s earlier decision, keeping the issue alive in the judicial arena.
Supreme Court Sets Deadline for Duterte’s Response
Just recently, the Supreme Court directed Vice President Duterte to submit her comments on the House’s appeal. She has 10 non-extendible days from receipt of the notice to comply. This order was issued on Tuesday, underscoring the urgency and significance of the ongoing legal proceedings.
As the Senate archives impeachment case developments, all eyes are on the Supreme Court’s next moves and Duterte’s timely response. The legal battle continues to unfold with high stakes for all parties involved.
