Teachers Urge Continued Fight for Public Accountability
A teachers’ group has urged educators and education workers to persist in demanding “full public accounting” after the Senate chose to archive the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. The case, which centers on allegations of misuse of confidential funds in 2023, including during her time at the Department of Education, remains a focal point of public concern.
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) joined the call to push forward with the impeachment trial, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. ACT Chairperson Vladimer Quetua criticized the Senate’s move, saying, “Though they claim the complaint is merely ‘archived’ pending the Supreme Court’s ruling, the senators’ explanations reveal that they have already adopted Duterte’s self-serving argument that the impeachment was ‘void ab initio.’”
Senate’s Decision Sparks Criticism
Quetua further called on teachers, education workers, and defenders of democracy to continue fighting for the proper accounting of public funds and the removal of corrupt officials. He said, “The Senate’s decision falls short of complete absolution of corruption. This act of protection mirrors a theater of legality masking the brute consolidation of power by a parasitic elite.”
He highlighted that while many Filipinos demand answers about the alleged misuse of confidential funds and the deteriorating conditions in schools, the Senate chose to shield what he described as “one of the most corrupt figures in the land.”
Call for Supreme Court Reconsideration
Quetua also urged the Supreme Court to reconsider its prior ruling that deemed the fourth impeachment complaint against the Vice President unconstitutional. He stressed, “We must acknowledge that the fight for justice cannot be won in institutions beholden to the ruling elite. It must be waged in the streets, in schools and in every arena where [the] people can organize and resist.”
