Senate Decision to Archive Impeachment Case: Duterte Calls for Respect
Vice President Sara Duterte has welcomed the Senate decision to archive the impeachment case filed against her. She emphasized that the upper chamber’s choice must be respected by all Filipinos.
The Senate’s move to archive the impeachment case followed a Supreme Court ruling that declared the complaint against Duterte unconstitutional. This development has brought attention to the role of the Philippine Senate in handling such matters.
“Let us respect the role of the Philippine Senate and its part in our nation. The decision of the majority of the members of the Senate must be followed by all,” Duterte said in Cebuano during a chance interview in Davao City.
Duterte Prepared Despite Case Archiving
Despite the Senate’s decision, Duterte assured that her legal team remains ready for any outcome. She reiterated her previous stance that she welcomed the impeachment process as an opportunity to present all evidence and respond to the allegations fully.
“As I said, ‘di ba, I wanted a bloodbath, meaning, I wanted all the pieces of evidence from the prosecution and all the pieces of evidence from the defense presented,” she explained.
She also noted that the archiving of the case does not close the door on future impeachment attempts. “Everything must be prepared for … so possibly in 2026, 2027, or 2028, there will still be those who will file for impeachment. That will be another opportunity to respond,” Duterte added.
Senate Vote and Legal Background
The Senate’s decision to archive the impeachment complaint was an amendment to a proposal by Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who sought outright dismissal after the Supreme Court’s ruling. The vote ended with 19 senators in favor, 4 against, and 1 abstention.
This action highlights the importance of the Senate’s process in addressing impeachment complaints and the respect accorded to its collective judgment.
