Senate Flood Control Probe Advances Despite Weather
MANILA, Philippines — The Senate flood control probe will continue as planned, even with the ongoing heavy rains, Senate President Francis Escudero confirmed on Monday. Officials reported that the investigation into anomalous flood control projects remains a priority despite challenging weather conditions.
In a message, Escudero emphasized that the Senate “will not, as of yet, declare a suspension of work” due to the importance of the scheduled hearings. “We shall closely monitor the weather this morning and until lunch time and will advise accordingly if there will be changes,” he added.
Chairpersons Hold Discretion Over Hearing Schedules
Escudero also noted that it is up to the respective committee chairpersons to decide whether to reset their hearings for the day. Local leaders said this flexibility allows the Senate to balance safety concerns with the need to push forward critical investigations.
The ongoing probe by the blue ribbon panel focuses on controversial flood control projects that have sparked public scrutiny. Meanwhile, the Senate finance committee is set to meet with the Development Budget Coordination Committee to discuss the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2026.
Other Senate Committees Remain Active
Community members reported that the Senate committee on agriculture is also scheduled to deliberate on the Rice Industry and Consumer Empowerment Act. These multiple sessions highlight the Senate’s commitment to fulfilling its legislative duties despite adverse weather.
Government Suspends Work and Classes Amid Heavy Rains
The Department of the Interior and Local Government announced the suspension of classes and work in Metro Manila and 16 other provinces. This decision came as heavy rains, driven by the southwest monsoon and a low-pressure area located 570 kilometers east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, continue to affect the region.
Officials reported that these weather disturbances have heightened flood risks, underscoring the urgency of the ongoing Senate flood control probe. The Senate’s vigilance reflects a broader effort to address infrastructure and disaster preparedness in the country.
