Senate Leader Condemns China Coast Guard Harassment

Senate Leader Addresses China Coast Guard Harassment

Recent incidents involving the China Coast Guard (CCG) have once again escalated tensions in the West Philippine Sea. Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada emphasized that Filipinos will not be intimidated by the ongoing confrontations. The phrase China Coast Guard harassment has become a key issue in maritime disputes, particularly after the latest aggressive actions against Philippine vessels.

Estrada pointed out that this pattern of harassment is not new. “This no longer comes as a surprise, given that the China Coast Guard (CCG) has been continuously harassing our maritime scientists and uniformed personnel for several years now, with no signs of letting up,” he said in a recent statement. The latest episode involved a water cannon attack on a Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources vessel, raising concerns over the safety of Filipino personnel operating in the disputed waters.

Firm Stance Against Maritime Provocations

Despite these provocations, Estrada reassured the public that the Philippines will firmly defend its sovereignty. “Nonetheless, we will not be intimidated and will stand our ground in protesting each and every provocation and violation of our sovereignty and dignity,” he declared.

The senator urged the government to respond decisively by lodging a strong diplomatic protest. “The Philippines must immediately file a firm and unequivocal diplomatic protest against these repeated transgressions,” he stressed. According to community leaders and local experts, such diplomatic actions are crucial to assert the country’s rights without escalating tensions unnecessarily.

Strengthening Alliances for Regional Security

Estrada also highlighted the importance of building stronger partnerships with like-minded nations. “This incident highlights the urgent need to strengthen our alliances with like-minded nations who share our commitment to peace, stability, and the rule of law in the region,” he said.

In his own words: “Dapat natin palakasin ang pakikipag-ugnayan at security cooperation sa ating mga kaalyado para maprotektahan ang ating mga kababayan at ang ating territorial integrity.” Strengthening engagement and security cooperation with allies is seen by many as a strategic move to safeguard Philippine interests and ensure the safety of its citizens in contested maritime zones.
