Senate Leadership Talks: Possibility of Change Emerges
Senator-elect Vicente “Tito” Sotto III recently confirmed that talks about a possible Senate leadership change are still ongoing. As the 20th Congress prepares to open on July 28, the idea of shifting Senate leadership remains a prominent topic among senators.
During a Thursday visit to the Senate, Sotto deflected initial questions about a leadership contest. He suggested that inquiries about the Senate leadership talks are best directed to his colleagues. “Some of them have approached me, asking if I’m ready to lead. And of course, my answer is yes, if that’s what they want,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino.
When pressed further on whether these discussions are still active, Sotto affirmed that they are. “I’m still hearing the same things in the discussions reaching me,” he added. Despite describing himself as “old school,” Sotto clarified that he is not actively seeking support from fellow senators. He remains uncertain if others are rallying support on his behalf.
Incoming Senators Share Views on Leadership Talks
Newly elected Senator Erwin Tulfo weighed in on the matter, noting that talks about a leadership shift have quieted down. “Maybe someone has already been chosen,” Tulfo joked during a separate interview. He also confirmed being approached by supporters of both Sotto and incumbent Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero. Both camps sought his backing, with Sotto inviting him to join their group, and Escudero extending a similar offer.
Tulfo expressed caution in making an immediate commitment. “It’s hard to commit right away,” he said. However, he emphasized his intention to align with the new majority bloc in the Senate. At the same time, Tulfo stressed that joining the majority doesn’t mean blind agreement. “Even if you’re in the majority, of course you have to ask yourself, ‘Is this really right?’ Because if it goes against what the people want, then I have to stand up and question it. I can’t just stay quiet—I can’t just accept it even if it’s wrong. That’s why I have to stand up,” he declared.
Next Steps Await Senate Leadership Outcome
Senator-elect Sotto also shared that his future plans depend on the final composition of Senate leadership in the 20th Congress. “I’d rather cross that bridge when I get there,” he said. He wants to first observe who will lead and how the leadership will be structured before deciding on his next moves.
As the Senate approaches the new legislative term, uncertainty remains about the leadership dynamics. However, ongoing talks and outreach to incoming senators indicate a keen interest in shaping the Senate’s direction.
