Senate Leadership Term-Sharing: A Path to Unity
Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito recently expressed support for a term-sharing agreement between the two leading candidates for Senate leadership. Both Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero and former Senate President Vicente Sotto III, who are strong contenders for the top Senate post in the 20th Congress, belong to the Nationalist Peoples Coalition (NPC). Ejercito believes a term-sharing deal would foster cooperation and prevent conflict.
“It’s up to them. It will be better if there’s no quarrel,” Ejercito said during a Kapihan sa Senado forum. “It will be better if we worked together, especially if we’re in one party. Ideally, it will be better if we don’t scatter.”
The senator emphasized that, amid the country’s many challenges, the Senate needs a united and effective leader to navigate turbulent times.
Calls for Cooperation Among Senate Leaders
Ejercito noted that discussions about leadership changes are common when a new Congress convenes. “It’s normal in a new Congress, unfortunately both of them are my partymates,” he added, highlighting the delicate balance within the party.
Sources revealed that members of the so-called Duterte bloc have confirmed outreach efforts from both Sotto and Escudero to secure their support. Meanwhile, Senator Imee Marcos has also admitted to receiving offers to run for the Senate presidency.
Challenges and Opportunities in Senate Leadership
The possibility of a term-sharing agreement could ease tensions and ensure smooth governance in the Senate. Ejercito’s call for unity underscores the importance of putting aside rivalry for the greater good of the nation.
As the 20th Congress approaches, the spotlight remains on these key figures, whose leadership will shape legislative priorities and responses to national issues.
