Senate Issues Subpoenas for Flood Control Contractors
MANILA, Philippines — The Senate blue ribbon panel has taken decisive action by ordering subpoenas for private contractors who failed to attend the committee’s hearing on anomalous flood control projects. The move aims to compel attendance and ensure accountability in these critical government undertakings.
Of the 15 contractors identified by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos as major recipients of flood control contracts, only seven sent representatives to the hearing. This limited participation raised concerns among committee members and prompted further measures.
Motion to Compel Attendance Gains Approval
Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa proposed issuing subpoenas to the absent contractors to guarantee their presence in the next hearing. His motion encountered no opposition and was swiftly approved by panel chair Senator Rodante Marcoleta, reinforcing the panel’s commitment to transparency and thorough investigation.
The Senate blue ribbon panel had sent invitations to all 15 contractors previously named by President Marcos. Out of these, 11 replied, but only seven attended the session. This gap in attendance underscores the need for stronger enforcement.
Contractors Represented in the Senate Probe
The contractors who participated in the hearing included Legacy Construction Corporation, QM Builders, EGB Construction Corporation, Centerways Construction and Development Inc., Triple 8 Construction & Supply, Inc., MG Samidan Construction, and Road Edge Trading & Development Services /apl.
Officials noted that the presence of these seven companies allows the panel to begin scrutinizing the awarded flood control projects. However, the absence of the remaining contractors leaves questions unanswered, prompting the Senate to summon them formally.
Ensuring Accountability in Flood Control Projects
Community members emphasized the importance of transparency in flood control initiatives, given their impact on public safety and infrastructure. The Senate’s firm stance on compelling all contractors to attend hearings reflects growing public demand for accountability and effective governance.
As investigations continue, the blue ribbon panel aims to uncover irregularities and safeguard public funds allocated for flood control. The issuance of subpoenas is a critical step toward achieving these goals.
