Senate President Closes Third Regular Session
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero warmly adjourned the third regular session of the 19th Congress with a speech full of wit and heartfelt reflection. As he addressed his colleagues on the evening of June 11, Escudero infused his remarks with humor and genuine appreciation, underscoring the importance of unity among senators.
In his speech, Escudero acknowledged the extensive work done throughout the session, noting humorously that most of the formal thanks and praises had been shared earlier during the valedictory speeches of outgoing senators. “Wala na akong mababanggit,” he joked. “Naangkin na rin ang lahat ng panukalang batas.” He expressed deep gratitude not only to his fellow senators but also to the dedicated Senate staff and secretariat who endured the demanding schedule inside and outside the chamber.
Lighthearted Moments Among Colleagues
Despite the serious tone, Escudero took the opportunity to share light-hearted banter. To Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, he extended a playful pardon for lengthy interpellations, admitting, “Naiinis ako, pero pag natapos siya, may punto naman talaga.” He credited these exchanges for sharpening his own insights.
He also praised Senator Nancy Binay’s calm and steady presence, teasing her about handling inconveniences like the air-conditioning being turned off, a move attributed to Senator Loren Legarda. Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. received a more personal nod, with Escudero expressing how he would miss their conversations on family matters.
Tribute to Senator Grace Poe and Senate Staff
The most touching tribute was reserved for Senator Grace Poe. Escudero shared, “I think I will miss you the most,” adding that her growth since her first term was evident and that her late parents would be proud. He noted, “Not because I need something from you, but because no one will pester me anymore.”
Acknowledging the teamwork behind passing laws and resolutions, Escudero highlighted the crucial role of the Senate’s often-unseen workforce. He called for recognition of their tireless efforts, emphasizing that legislative achievements were a collective effort.
Reflection on Political Unity and Future Cooperation
Reflecting on recent political challenges, Escudero urged his peers not to judge one another by past political alliances. “That does not in any way define us,” he stressed. “Lahat ng miyembro, buo ang aking tiwala na nasa isip at puso nila ang kapakanan ng bayan.”
Looking back on his own departure from the Senate in 2019, he reassured everyone that this was not a final goodbye. “Hindi ako magpapaalam,” he said. “Ang sasabihin ko, hanggang sa muli nating pagkikita.”
He closed his address with an optimistic outlook: “I look forward to working with you in government, in the Senate, and anywhere, in the name and service of the Filipino people.”
