Senate Questions Contractor’s Luxury Car Collection
MANILA, Philippines — During the ongoing Senate probe into alleged irregularities in flood control projects, a senator raised eyebrows over contractor Sarah Discaya’s ownership of 28 luxury cars. The senator expressed disbelief about the sheer number of high-end vehicles tied to one individual.
Discaya, who is the President of Alpha & Omega General Contractor and Development Corporation, detailed the collection during Monday’s hearing. She named prestigious brands including Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, Cadillac Escalade, Range Rover, GMC, Suburban, and G63 among others. This revelation sparked intense scrutiny from lawmakers.
Senate President Pro Tempore Voices Doubts
Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada openly criticized Discaya’s impressive fleet. He remarked, “It’s only now that I have encountered someone or a couple owning this many cars. I don’t mind those who own Fortuner, that’s okay. But you, you own Rolls-Royce, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, Escalade, Range Rover, how many? GMC, 663, I don’t even understand that.” The statement, delivered in Filipino, reflected the frustration of lawmakers over the contractor’s wealth amidst the investigation.
Unusual Purchase and Allegations of Kickbacks
In a surprising admission, Discaya confessed to purchasing a vehicle solely because of its built-in umbrella feature, highlighting her preference for luxury. Subsequently, Estrada suggested that Discaya might have connections within the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). He questioned how much commission she paid upfront to secure government contracts.
Discaya firmly denied these allegations, stating simply, “Wala po akong binibigyan sa DPWH.” Meanwhile, officials from the Bureau of Customs announced they would investigate the luxury cars linked to the Discaya family, who have recently been associated with questionable flood control projects.
Ownership of Multiple Companies and Government Contracts
Although Discaya initially claimed to have divested from several firms, she later acknowledged owning nine companies that have secured various government projects. These companies include:
- Alpha & Omega General Contractor & Development Corporation
- St. Timothy Construction Corporation
- St. Gerrard Construction General Contractor & Development Corporation
- Elite General Contractor & Development Corporation
- St. Matthew General Contractor & Development Corporation
- Great Pacific Builders & General Contractor Inc.
- YPR General Contractor and Construction Supply Inc.
- Amethyst Horizon Builders and General Contractor & Development Corporation
- Way Maker General Contractor
From 2022 to 2025, Discaya revealed that her companies have been involved in approximately 400 projects with the DPWH. These projects cover not only flood control initiatives but also road and building constructions, mainly in the country’s remote areas, officials reported.
Continuing Investigation into Flood Control Anomalies
The Senate continues its probe into the alleged anomalous flood control projects, with authorities closely examining the financial dealings and assets of contractors like Discaya. Community members and local leaders have expressed concern over the misuse of public funds and the implications of corrupt practices.
As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge regarding the extent of irregularities and the involvement of various parties.
