Senate Launches Probe into Flood Control Projects
MANILA, Philippines – The Senate blue ribbon panel has officially started its motu proprio investigation into the flood control projects plagued by alleged anomalies in the country. This probe aims to uncover irregularities and ensure transparency in these critical infrastructure undertakings.
Among those present during the initial hearing were Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoanan, alongside representatives from EGB Construction Corporation, Centerways Construction and Development Inc., and Sunwest, Inc. These companies are among the 15 contractors identified by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as having secured the majority of government flood control contracts.
Senate Panel Head Calls for Thorough Investigation
Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who leads the blue ribbon panel, emphasized the urgency of examining the flood control projects suspected to be riddled with corruption. He expressed that this inquiry is crucial to exposing the truth behind these questionable contracts.
“Napapanahon na para alamin at himayin ang katotohanan sa likod ng mga maanomalyang nakapalibot sa mga kontratang inilaan para sa flood control. Tama na ang pagpapaikot at paglihis sa tunay na problema,” Marcoleta stated firmly.
He further added, “It is about time to scrutinize and know the truth behind anomalies surrounding flood control projects. Enough of skirting the problem.” According to the senator, the root cause lies in the deep-seated corruption embedded within the government’s processes.
Focus on Transparency and Accountability
The panel aims to shed light on the mysterious dealings between government agencies and private contractors. Officials reported that this investigation will cover contract awarding procedures, project implementation status, and fund utilization to ensure public resources are properly managed.
Community members noted that the flood control projects are vital to protecting millions of Filipinos from the increasing risks of flooding, especially during the typhoon season. Therefore, ensuring the integrity of these projects is paramount to safeguarding lives and properties.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The Senate blue ribbon panel plans to summon additional contractors and government officials involved in flood control initiatives. They will also review project documents and financial records to detect any discrepancies or irregularities.
Local leaders expressed hope that this probe will lead to stronger enforcement of anti-corruption measures and better oversight of public infrastructure projects in the future.
