Senate Prepares for Vice President Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial
The Senate will convene as an impeachment court on June 3 to issue summons and other orders related to the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. This development reflects the ongoing political process following the May 2025 elections.
Senate President Francis Escudero informed the House of Representatives that the Senate will receive the panel of prosecutors at 4 p.m. on June 2, 2025. Congress is set to resume regular sessions on June 2, with the 19th Congress scheduled to adjourn on June 14.
“Pursuant to Rule 1 of the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials, we would like to inform your good office that, having taken proper order on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, the Senate shall be ready to receive the House of Representatives’ panel of prosecutors at 4 o’clock in the afternoon of June 2, 2025,” Escudero wrote in a letter addressed to the House Speaker.
Details of the Impeachment Proceedings
According to the Senate President’s letter, the prosecution is expected to read the seven charges listed under the Articles of Impeachment during an open session. Subsequently, the Senate will formally convene as an impeachment court the following day at 9 a.m. to issue summons and other necessary orders.
The Vice President’s office has already received a copy of this letter, confirming the schedule and procedures.
Allegations Against Vice President Duterte
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives filed impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte, accusing her of betrayal of public trust and serious violations of the Constitution. The complaints also include allegations of high crimes such as plotting to assassinate the sitting President, the First Lady, and the House Speaker.
Further accusations involve graft and corruption linked to the alleged misuse of funds from the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, which Duterte previously led. Additional charges include bribery, acts of destabilization, conspiracy, murder, unexplained wealth, and failure to properly disclose assets in her statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN).
Upcoming Senate Actions on Impeachment Trial
With these developments, the Senate is taking active steps to carry out its constitutional role as an impeachment court. The process will officially begin with the reception of the prosecution panel and the reading of charges, followed by issuing summons to the accused.
Observers note that this trial marks a significant moment in the country’s political landscape, reflecting the checks and balances within the government.
