Senate Calls for Urgent Search of Filipinos in Israel Iran
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Monday, June 16, urged Philippine authorities to accelerate efforts in locating all Filipinos seeking repatriation amid the rising conflict between Israel and Iran. He emphasized that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) must lead these efforts promptly.
“The DFA and DMW should go the extra mile in locating and reaching out to Filipinos in Israel and Iran to determine who wants to get out of the two countries now,” Escudero said. He stressed that whether Filipinos are documented or undocumented should not hinder assistance. “It doesn’t matter if they are legally staying or undocumented. What is important is that Filipinos who fear for their safety and want to go home are assisted without delay,” he added.
Existing Government Plans and Repatriation Funds
The Senate leader noted that government agencies already maintain contingency plans for emergencies like natural disasters or armed conflicts affecting Filipino communities abroad. “We have funds for the repatriation of our compatriots whenever there is trouble in the countries they are in,” Escudero said, highlighting the Philippines’ experience in handling such crises.
“What is important is to immediately determine where our compatriots are and offer a ride home to those whose lives are in danger,” he added, urging swift action to prioritize safety.
Post-Repatriation Support and Career Guidance
Once Filipinos are repatriated, Escudero recommended that the DMW provide immediate stress debriefing, especially for those directly affected by the conflict. He also underscored the need for career counseling for those who choose to stay in the Philippines, considering the disruption of their employment abroad.
“It is imperative that repatriated Filipinos who wish to remain in the country are provided with the opportunities and the tools needed to start fresh,” Escudero said, emphasizing the importance of support to help them rebuild their lives.
Background on the Israel-Iran Conflict
Last week, Israel launched attacks targeting Iran’s nuclear and military facilities, claiming these strikes aimed to prevent Iran from developing atomic weapons. Iran retaliated with missile and air strikes against Israel, escalating tensions.
According to sources, approximately 1,180 Filipinos live in Iran, 30,742 in Israel, and 1,598 in Iraq. The government’s swift and coordinated response aims to ensure the safety of Filipino nationals in these volatile regions.
