Senate Work Suspended Amid Southwest Monsoon
Work in the Senate will stay suspended on Wednesday, July 23, as heavy rains continue to batter Metro Manila. These downpours are caused by the southwest monsoon, locally known as the “habagat.” Senate President Francis Escudero has directed this suspension to ensure the safety of all personnel amid the ongoing severe weather.
According to an advisory from Senate Secretary Atty. Renato Bantug Jr., the forecast predicts persistent heavy rainfall across the capital. Consequently, Senate operations will remain on hold to prevent risks associated with flooding and hazardous conditions. This measure follows a partial suspension of work on July 22, also prompted by the same weather disturbance.
Weather Disturbances Fueling Heavy Rains
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is closely monitoring Tropical Depression Dante. This low-pressure area is currently located east-southeast of Batanes within the Philippine area of responsibility. Additionally, another low-pressure area lies about 2,705 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, outside the country’s boundary.
Alongside these systems, the southwest monsoon continues to unleash torrential rains across multiple provinces. Areas affected include Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Pangasinan, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Laguna, Rizal, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Abra, Nueva Ecija, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Marinduque, Romblon, Masbate, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental.
Safety Measures and Public Advisory
Local authorities and leaders urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flooding or landslides. The continuation of intense rains may disrupt daily activities and transportation. It is advisable to stay updated through official channels and heed warnings issued by weather agencies.
Senate officials will monitor the situation closely and announce further suspensions if necessary. The priority remains the safety of all Senate employees and the public.
