Senator Bong Go Appeals for Duterte Support
TAGBILARAN CITY, BOHOL — Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go called on Boholanos to unite in prayer for former President Rodrigo Duterte’s health, freedom, and safety during his visit to the province on July 11, 2025.
Speaking at the 428th Foundation Day and 3rd Suba Festival in Loboc town, Go delivered a heartfelt message urging the community to support Duterte through prayer. The senator’s appeal came amid the ongoing legal challenges Duterte faces.
Emotional Message Amid Legal Challenges
Go, visibly emotional, admitted that Duterte’s absence has deeply affected him. “I’m so depressed. I miss him dearly,” he shared, expressing the close bond he has with the former president.
Having served as Duterte’s trusted aide for 24 years before becoming a senator in 2019, Go noted that his time with Duterte exceeds the years spent with his own father. This long-standing relationship highlights the depth of Go’s concern.
Background on Duterte’s Situation
Duterte is currently facing trial before the International Criminal Court (ICC) following his arrest linked to a warrant issued by the tribunal. The charges allege crimes against humanity related to thousands of deaths during his controversial war on drugs, which also partly involves his time as Davao City mayor.
His initial court appearance was conducted via video link on March 14, 2025. The confirmation hearing for the charges is scheduled for September 23, 2025.
Senator’s Local Engagements in Bohol
Earlier on the same day, Senator Go visited Alburquerque town, where he inaugurated the newly constructed Barangay Bahi multipurpose building. He also toured the local public market and tennis court, projects that his office helped support.
Local leaders noted the positive impact of these initiatives on the community, reinforcing Go’s commitment to public service beyond his political duties.
