Senator Dela Rosa Addresses Calls for Arrest at The Hague
Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa humorously responded to reporters on Saturday, May 17, after securing a new six-year term in the Senate. When asked about the possibility of being detained abroad, he jokingly said, “Atat na atat kayo makulong ako doon ah” (You’re really in a hurry to have me jailed there).
This remark came amid questions about his plans to visit former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague, Netherlands, facing allegations of crimes against humanity linked to the controversial war on drugs. Dela Rosa, the former Philippine National Police chief, was the main enforcer of this campaign.
Plans to Visit Former President Duterte in The Hague
Despite the lighthearted tone, Dela Rosa confirmed his intention to travel to The Hague. He said, “Mag-apply ako ng Schengen Visa. At kung bibgyan ako, tanungin ko si [former Executive Secretary Salvador] Medialdea kung okay ba na pupunta ako doon” (I will apply for a Schengen Visa. And if granted, I will ask Medialdea if it’s okay for me to go there).
His plans come after a period of relative silence following Duterte’s unexpected arrest by Interpol in the Philippines on March 11, during the election campaign season.
Possible Legal Implications Amid ICC Case
Dela Rosa is reportedly named as a co-accused in the crimes against humanity case filed at the International Criminal Court headquartered in The Hague. However, he stated he has not yet received any notice regarding an arrest warrant. “But if there’s already one, then he could face the same fate that befell his former boss Duterte,” sources familiar with the matter suggest.
The senator’s remarks and future steps are being closely watched as the legal proceedings unfold internationally. Meanwhile, he remains active in his legislative duties after winning re-election.
