Senator Calls for Probe on Selling Government-Issued IDs
MANILA, Philippines — Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros urged authorities to continue their investigation into the selling of government-issued identification cards to non-Filipino citizens. This call comes after the arrest of Wang Xiujun, a Chinese national known as the “Alice Guo of Manila.”
Wang, 43, was caught misrepresenting herself as a Filipino named Cassia Palma Poliquit, according to sources. This case resembles that of dismissed Bamban Mayor Alice Guo, whose true identity was Guo Hua Ping. The senator emphasized, “Nobody should be able to purchase being a Filipino.”
Long-Standing Issue of Fake IDs
Though shocked, Hontiveros said she is no longer surprised by foreigners pretending to be Filipinos. “Our Senate hearings on Philippine offshore gaming operators and Alice Guo clearly showed that official Filipino documents have been up for sale and used for evil,” she explained.
She believes this troubling scheme has persisted for years and demands urgent government action. The senator stressed that law enforcement agencies must thoroughly investigate those behind the illegal sale of government-issued IDs to foreigners.
Calls for Government Agency Cleanup
Hontiveros also urged agencies such as the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Department of Foreign Affairs to review and purge their personnel if necessary. “Government agencies like the Philippine Statistics Authority and Department of Foreign Affairs should also consider cleaning up their ranks, if needed,” she added.
Her Senate committee on women was responsible for scrutinizing Guo and her fraudulent identity. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further abuses.
