Senator Pushes Bill Against AI Deepfakes Fraud
Senator Bam Aquino has announced plans to introduce a new bill aimed at curbing the rise of AI deepfakes used to defraud the public. This move specifically targets the growing misuse of artificial intelligence to create misleading videos that deceive viewers.
He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue as AI deepfakes fraud increasingly threatens the trust and safety of ordinary Filipinos. Aquino called on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate a recent AI-generated video falsely showing him endorsing a government-backed investment scheme.
False AI Video Sparks Official Response
In a public statement, the senator clarified, “There’s no truth to the circulating AI video where I am supposedly endorsing such a program.” The clip features a well-known female news anchor falsely reporting Aquino’s support for what is described as a “national platform for inclusive financial growth.”
This deceptive video claims that individuals can earn up to ₱175,000 weekly from an initial investment of just ₱15,000, a promise Aquino strongly disputes.
Call for Accountability and Removal of Fake Content
Aquino urged authorities to identify and hold accountable those responsible for creating and distributing the AI deepfakes fraud. He stressed, “These people who deceive others should be punished accordingly. Let us put a stop to these activities that usually victimize our fellow Filipinos who work hard just to earn money.”
Moreover, he appealed to social media platforms to promptly remove such fake content to prevent further victimization and protect the public from scams driven by manipulated AI videos.
As AI technology advances, the senator’s proposed legislation aims to establish clear regulations and safeguards against the malicious use of deepfake technology, ensuring the public’s security and trust.
