Senator Files Cyberlibel Complaints Against Viral Video Creators
Senator Risa Hontiveros took decisive legal action on Wednesday by filing cyberlibel complaints against the personalities involved in a viral video. The video, which accused her of coercing testimony against the Dutertes and Apollo Quiboloy, sparked widespread attention and controversy. The senator aims to uncover the truth behind these damaging claims.
Hontiveros lodged the complaint with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) targeting Michael Maurillo, identified as the person who made the accusations, along with Pagtanggol Valiente, the YouTube channel and Facebook page responsible for uploading the contentious video. The senator’s actions highlight her commitment to addressing the spread of false information.
False Accusations and Investigations Unfold
In the now-viral footage, Maurillo alleged that Hontiveros coerced him into testifying against former President Rodrigo Duterte, Vice President Sara Duterte, and Apollo Quiboloy, claiming she paid him PHP 1 million in exchange for his testimony. However, Hontiveros firmly denied these allegations, stating that Maurillo had actually reached out to her office days before the video’s release, reporting that he was kidnapped and held at the Kingdom of Jesus Christ premises.
Following this, the Philippine National Police announced an ongoing investigation into the alleged kidnapping. Meanwhile, Hontiveros and her legal team identified cyberlibel as the most fitting charge against those responsible for producing and spreading the false information.
Seeking the Truth Behind the Videos
“The main purpose of the complaint is to find out who or what is behind the production of Maurillo’s two videos,” Hontiveros explained in a brief interview after filing the complaint. She added, “Because until now, no one has admitted or claimed the video.”
Moreover, the complaints also call for an investigation into several vloggers accused of amplifying disinformation against the senator. These include Krizette Chu, Jay Sonza, Sass Rogando Sasot, Trixie Cruz-Angeles, and Banat By, among others. Hontiveros emphasized patience as authorities probe deeper, saying, “So let’s wait and see the progress of this investigation. This is just the first step, and we will find out who else should be charged and what else should be charged against them.”
Legal Actions and Calls for Accountability
Hontiveros expressed hope that Maurillo would be placed under police custody soon. This move aims to halt the spread of false accusations against her while ensuring his safety amid the unfolding investigation. The senator’s proactive stance reflects the growing concern over cyberlibel and misinformation in the digital age.
