Hontiveros Considers Opposition Standard Bearer Role
Senator Risa Hontiveros revealed on Wednesday, May 21, that she is open to the possibility of becoming the opposition standard bearer in the 2028 presidential elections. The senator emphasized the importance of a progressive or reformist alternative from the opposition to challenge candidates backed by the Duterte and Marcos blocs.
She stated, “I’m not saying no. I’m open to all possibilities. And that is what I am asking of all those in the opposition or independent bloc, that we be open to all possibilities and to each other, for the sake of the opposition and for the sake of our countrymen.” This highlights her willingness to consider various options as the opposition prepares for the next election cycle.
Building Unity for a Strong Opposition Candidate
Hontiveros explained that the opposition’s immediate priority is to unify those who collaborated during the May 2025 campaign. For the next nine months, they will focus on fostering trust and confidence within their ranks. “When we do that homework, that’s the solid core from which we can further expand or explore,” she added.
She also mentioned the need for a third candidate or slate to stand alongside those endorsed by powerful political blocs. “So at least there is a third slate, at least a third candidate. I still don’t know who they are. Because that would be part of the selection process that I’m hoping we can design after the first nine months of unifying our own force,” Hontiveros said.
Looking Ahead to 2028 Presidential Elections
The senator’s openness to becoming the opposition standard bearer signals a strategic approach to the 2028 presidential race. Local experts suggest that such a progressive candidate could offer voters a clear alternative to established political groups.
Reports indicate that the opposition bloc is carefully crafting a selection process to identify the best candidate who can unite reformist forces. Hontiveros’ stance encourages collaboration and flexibility among opposition members as they prepare for the challenging political landscape ahead.
