Senator Endorses Courtesy Resignation to Boost Accountability
Senator Joel Villanueva voiced his support on Tuesday, May 27, for President Marcos’ call for the courtesy resignation of Cabinet officials. He emphasized that this directive is a decisive step toward improving government accountability. According to sources familiar with the matter, Villanueva stressed that public office should be viewed as a performance-based responsibility, not merely a reward for political allegiance.
“This move ensures that every government agency is working at par with the standards expected – not just by the administration, but by the Filipino people,” Villanueva said. He added, “I fully support the President in this bold initiative and call for a merit-based, performance-driven Cabinet. The Filipino people deserve no less.”
Concerns Raised Over DOH Secretary’s Frequent Travels
The senator also highlighted concerns regarding the Department of Health (DOH), focusing on Secretary Teodoro Herbosa’s frequent foreign trips. Reports indicate that since his appointment in 2023, Herbosa has traveled abroad 19 times, averaging one trip every two months. Villanueva questioned these travels, especially given unresolved issues within the DOH.
“If we are talking about statistics just like in basketball, that’s one travel every two months,” Villanueva remarked. He pointed out that such frequent absences raise questions about the department’s leadership and effectiveness.
Senate Resolutions Seek Probes on DOH Issues
To address these concerns, Villanueva has filed three separate Senate resolutions in the past two months aimed at investigating various problems within the DOH. Among the most pressing issues is Proposed Senate Resolution No. 1326, which seeks to examine the reported P11.18 billion worth of expired or wasted medicines and medical supplies procured by the department in 2023.
Villanueva reiterated that performance must be the primary criterion in retaining or appointing public officials. “This is the time to take the bad eggs out of the Cabinet,” he said, urging for a more accountable and effective government team.
