Senator Tito Sotto Begins Final Senate Term
SENATOR Vicente “Tito” Sotto III recently took his oath for what he believes will be his final term in the Senate, citing his advancing age and a desire to pass on his knowledge to younger lawmakers. This marks his fifth term, where he aims to focus on mentoring new senators and pushing important legislation.
Sotto’s oath-taking occurred at the historic National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila, a meaningful venue where he first served as senator and where the Senate was housed until 1997. He was sworn in before Commission on Elections Commissioner Ernesto Maceda Jr., the son of his late mentor, former Senate president Ernie Maceda Sr., highlighting the significance of the occasion.
“I took the oath with Commissioner Maceda and in this historic place … [this] will probably be my last term considering my age,” Sotto told reporters. He added, “I’m starting to feel a bit tired — by 2031, I might not have the drive anymore — so I thought it’s best to do this where I first started.”
Sharing Wisdom and Legislative Priorities
Senator Tito Sotto emphasized his intention to share the vast experience and knowledge he has gathered over the years with the newer and younger members of the Senate. He believes this will help them better serve the Filipino people and strengthen the legislative body.
“I’ll be able to share with the new and younger senators not just my experience, but also things that will be beneficial to our country and our fellow Filipinos,” he explained. He plans to focus on these priorities throughout the next six years.
Among the key bills Sotto aims to advance early in his term are the Freedom of Information Bill and a proposal to institutionalize a 14th month pay for workers. These initiatives reflect his ongoing commitment to transparency and workers’ welfare.
Looking Ahead to a Legacy of Service
As Senator Tito Sotto embarks on what he calls his final senate term, he carries a mission not only to legislate but to mentor and inspire. His decision to take his oath in a place rich with Senate history underscores his respect for tradition and his hope for the future of Philippine governance.
