Calls for a Strong Philippine National Police Chief
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has urged President Marcos to appoint a Philippine National Police Chief who demonstrates strong leadership, unwavering integrity, and a genuine commitment to public service. Highlighting the urgency of this decision, the senator stressed that the next PNP Chief must focus on restoring peace and order—an essential foundation not only for public safety but also for economic stability and growth.
“The next PNP Chief must focus on restoring peace and order, which is crucial to public safety and economic growth,” Gatchalian said. He emphasized that the new leader should actively address critical concerns, such as human trafficking, kidnappings, issues related to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), and bold crimes occurring openly in broad daylight.
Tackling Crime and Internal Reforms Within the Police
Beyond combating external threats, the senator also pointed out the importance of internal reforms within the police force. He insisted that purging corruption among officers is vital to restoring public trust and maintaining the integrity of the institution.
“Isa pang mabigat na hamon para sa susunod na PNP Chief ang paglinis sa sariling hanay ng mga tiwaling pulis upang maibalik ang tiwala ng publiko at mapanatili ang integridad ng institusyon,” he added, underscoring this challenge.
President Marcos’ Position on the Next PNP Chief
President Marcos has confirmed that he has already selected the next country’s top police official but has yet to reveal the name. He stated that the chosen officer should hear about the appointment directly from him first. Meanwhile, the President has instructed the Philippine National Police to continue building on the successes of its current anti-crime efforts.
Although the identity of the next PNP Chief remains undisclosed, the President described the appointee as a senior officer well-versed in the nation’s law enforcement landscape, signaling experience as a key factor.
