MANILA, Philippines – On the 164th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, Senator Loren Legarda called on Filipinos to embrace the national hero’s life and legacy as an inspiring example of moral courage, social awareness, and unwavering compassion.
“More than a revolutionary writer, Rizal was a reformist who faced the challenges of his era with honesty, clarity, and dignity. His story reminds us that every Filipino must speak out against injustice, defend the vulnerable, and act with integrity, especially when it is hardest,” Legarda said.

Rizal believed strongly in the power of young people to lead change. “He wrote, questioned, and challenged the status quo even at a young age. His life teaches us that age does not limit influence; the youth can shape history,” Legarda noted.
She concluded by encouraging Filipinos to live Rizal’s example daily—by holding leaders accountable, protecting the environment, valuing education, and defending truth. “The greatest tribute to Rizal is keeping his spirit alive in every young Filipino who dares to dream, serve, and create positive change,” Legarda said.
In this spirit, she called on the youth to be the Rizal of their time—engaged, principled, and courageous. “Choosing a life of purpose and integrity, no matter the challenges, is the truest way to honor Rizal. The youth are the nation’s hope, strength, and future,” she emphasized.
