Senator Calls for Continued Online Gaming Investigation
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has urged the incoming lawmakers of the 20th Congress to persist in investigating online gaming activities in the Philippines. Despite the recent law banning Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO), the senator warned that online gaming continues to thrive and even expand.
Cayetano emphasized the importance of sustained scrutiny on this industry, noting, “The problem is, we have banned POGO, but the online industry in the country is now growing and Filipinos are the ones betting.” He expressed hope that the next Congress will take an active role in addressing these ongoing issues.
Background on the Anti-POGO Efforts
The senator praised the Senate and House for their previous investigations that exposed illegal POGO activities, leading to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s total ban on POGOs in 2024. Cayetano, a co-author of the Anti-POGO bill, has been a consistent opponent of gambling-related operations, especially online cockfighting (e-sabong) and POGOs.
In 2022, amid growing concerns over e-sabong’s social impact, including disappearances linked to the activity, he filed the Anti-Online Gambling Act (Senate Bill No. 63). This legislation aims to outlaw internet-based gambling and impose strict penalties on online betting.
Senator’s Firm Stance on Online Gambling
Cayetano’s opposition to POGOs is rooted in both moral grounds and economic considerations. He argued that the social costs caused by such operations far outweigh any economic benefits they might bring.
He explained, “Online gaming is not as addictive as e-sabong but it will get there. Because gaming is addictive. Using the internet is addictive.” He added, “If you put the two together, you can do that kind of gambling anywhere and anytime. Napaka delikado nito para sa atin (This is dangerous to us).”
The senator’s message highlights the urgent need for continuous vigilance and regulation to protect Filipino communities from the risks posed by online gambling.
