Senator Highlights Need to Revisit Historical Roots for Independence
MANILA, Philippines — Senator Loren Legarda called for a renewed focus on the country’s historical roots to strengthen Philippine independence during the 127th Bacoor Assembly anniversary on August 1, 2025. She emphasized unity and reflection as essential to sustaining the nation’s freedom.
Speaking at the Bacoor, Cavite site where the Declaration of Independence was ratified in 1898, Legarda underscored the importance of honoring the Filipino fight for liberty not only as tradition but as a foundation for nation-building. “Fellow countrymen, I pushed for this recognition not only because it is rightful in history, but also because it is a recognition and a rendering of justice to the complete narrative of our freedom,” she said in Filipino.
Significance of the Bacoor Assembly in Philippine History
The Bacoor Assembly involved 200 municipal presidents who ratified a version of the Philippine Declaration of Independence that removed foreign dependencies. This clearer assertion of sovereignty followed advice from Apolinario Mabini and concerns from Emilio Aguinaldo about the original June 12 proclamation, which lacked Aguinaldo’s signature. This ratification paved the way for the Malolos Congress, a key step in asserting Filipino self-determination.
Legarda’s own family legacy is deeply connected to this history; her great-grandfather, Ariston Gella, represented Antique in the Malolos Congress, continuing a tradition of public service.
Championing Cultural Heritage to Deepen Freedom
“Independence is not just the freedom to act, but the freedom to act for others. And the true strength of the Filipino lies in standing firm, not just for oneself, but for the nation,” Legarda stated, highlighting the collective spirit of Filipino independence.
Now serving her fourth term as senator, Legarda has authored and supported key laws promoting Philippine history and culture. Among these is Republic Act No. 12073, which officially commemorates August 1 as “Araw ng Paglalathala at Pagtatanyag ng Kasarinlan ng Pilipinas.”
She has been instrumental in preserving Filipino cultural heritage through legislation such as the National Cultural Heritage Act and Cultural Mapping Law. Legarda also supports community programs like the Schools of Living Traditions and promotes Filipino culture nationally through cultural events like Dayaw.
Unity and Understanding Strengthen National Freedom
“We will not achieve true independence if we do not know ourselves as a nation. And with every step that deepens our understanding of our culture and history, we strengthen our freedom,” Legarda stressed.
She added, “Our appreciation of the spirit of August 1 is a tribute to an important trait of being Filipino — the spirit of unity.” Local leaders and sources noted the ongoing relevance of these lessons in today’s nation-building efforts.
