Senator Calls for Stricter Controls on Online Gambling
Senator JV Ejercito recently emphasized the urgent need for the government to impose stricter controls on online gambling. He highlighted electronic cockfighting, commonly known as e-sabong, as a more serious concern compared to Philippine offshore gaming operators (Pogos). This call to action came during a DWIZ interview following revelations that 15 police officers were placed under restrictive custody linked to the abduction of 34 cockfighting enthusiasts.
“Because of the social consequences of the effects of e-sabong, e-games, online gaming and all that, I think the government should be strict with this and e-wallets should prevent being used for online gambling,” the senator said.
Challenges in Regulating Gambling Culture
Drawing from his experience as San Juan City mayor, Ejercito acknowledged the difficulty in regulating traditional cockfighting since it is deeply embedded in Filipino culture. However, he focused on the urgent need to address e-sabong, which former President Rodrigo Duterte banned in 2022.
“I think this is worse than Pogos. With Pogos, if it weren’t for the crimes that came with them, at least, it was foreign money entering our country,” the senator explained. “But, this is ordinary Filipinos’ money. Drivers, police officers, workers. They already make so little money, yet they gamble it away because it’s so easy. It can be done on cell phones.”
Social Impact and Government Response
The senator’s concerns underline the negative social impact online gambling is having on everyday Filipinos. Unlike Pogos, which involve foreign funds, e-sabong drains local incomes, affecting working-class individuals who often can’t afford to lose their earnings. The ease of access via mobile devices only worsens the issue.
Local authorities have responded by investigating and detaining police officers connected to the disappearance of cockfighting fans, reflecting the government’s growing awareness of the problem. Despite this, activists and families of missing individuals continue to call for intensified searches and more comprehensive policies to curb illegal gambling activities.
