Senator Lacson Alerts Public on Scammers Soliciting Donations
Senator Panfilo Lacson recently issued a strong warning to the public about scammers soliciting donations, urging everyone to stay vigilant. The senator exposed a fraudster who impersonated a former lawmaker to deceive people seeking financial support.
The scammer pretended to be ex-Congresswoman Josephine Sato, requesting money to rebuild a “typhoon-damaged orphanage building” in Occidental Mindoro. This case of scammers soliciting donations highlights the risks faced by those wanting to help disaster victims.
Scammer Posed as Former Lawmaker to Steal Funds
Lacson shared on social media that the fraudster contacted him directly, attempting to get funds for the supposed orphanage project. He revealed the scammer’s real identity along with a photo from the scammer’s Social Security System (SSS) ID.
“SCAMMER ON THE LOOSE: This person, misrepresenting himself as ex-Cong Nene Sato contacted the wrong guy when he asked me for financial support to rebuild a ‘typhoon damaged orphanage building’ in Occidental Mindoro. I have his real identity, even his photo on his SSS ID. GOTCHA, IDIOT!” Lacson posted on his X account.
The senator is now working closely with authorities to ensure the scammer faces legal consequences. He emphasized that people should be extra cautious, especially as many are still recovering from recent flooding.
Public Urged to Stay Alert Amid Disaster Recovery
Screenshots shared by Lacson showed Viber messages from the scammer using Sato’s photo as a profile picture. The fake messages included a “Gcash Donation Drive” number supposedly linked to the orphanage.
Local leaders and sources note that scams like this exploit the goodwill of compassionate donors during times of crisis. It is crucial to verify donation requests before sending any money.
