Senators Approach Tito Sotto About Senate Presidency
Three to four senators have reached out to presumptive senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III regarding his potential return as Senate president in the 20th Congress. Sotto confirmed this development during a recent press briefing, acknowledging discussions about the top Senate position.
When asked if any senators had spoken to him about the Senate presidency, Sotto replied, “I would be lying if I were to say no.” He added, “I’m not the type that would go around… If they have the numbers, I will accept.”
He further revealed that “three or four” senators expressed their readiness to support him, mentioning that these individuals believe their peers will back his bid.
Discussions with Current Senate Leadership
Sotto said he plans to speak with the current Senate President, Francis “Chiz” Escudero, who is also a member of their party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition. “The last time we talked was the last quarter of 2024. We never discussed this,” he noted.
Should Sotto not secure the Senate’s top post, he intends to seek the chairmanship of the Senate committee on ethics, demonstrating his willingness to remain active in leadership roles.
Senate Presidency Decisions Await 20th Congress Session
On the other hand, Escudero has stated that he remains the chamber’s top leader until the 20th Congress convenes, unless a majority decides otherwise. The decision to keep Escudero or replace him with Sotto will likely be made when the new Congress opens its session in July.
The exact timing and outcome of this leadership transition remain uncertain, but the approach of several senators to Sotto signals significant interest in his possible return to the Senate presidency.
