Growing National Crisis: Online Gambling in the Philippines
Senator Joel Villanueva has urgently called for an end to the rise of online gambling in the Philippines, labeling it a “growing national crisis.” During the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum, he emphasized that online gambling is no longer just leisure—it has evolved into a serious social problem.
“Online gambling is not simply a game but a growing national crisis. I would consider this a national crisis. This is not a form of entertainment. This is an addiction. This is promoting addiction. Promoting greed. That’s why this online gambling needs to end,” Villanueva stated firmly in Filipino.
Legislative Push to Ban Online Gambling
Villanueva first introduced Senate Bill No. 1281 in 2022, aiming to prohibit and penalize all forms of online gambling in the country. This bill targets betting and wagering activities conducted over the internet.
He confirmed his commitment to reintroduce and vigorously advocate for this bill in the 20th Congress. “I think we’re gaining ground and that is the way to go. We cannot just regulate it. Maybe we should start it already. Clean slate,” he added.
Support from Fellow Lawmakers
Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri also filed a similar measure in July, calling online gambling a “silent epidemic” that harms Filipinos, especially minors and vulnerable groups. Both senators agree that the vice demands a decisive response.
Economic Concerns and Government Response
Data shared by another senator estimated that the government could lose around P140 billion if online gambling were completely banned. However, lawmakers argue that alternative revenue sources could compensate for these losses.
Meanwhile, the Palace confirmed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is closely monitoring the situation, especially the plight of Filipinos addicted to online gambling.
Sources noted the urgent need to address this growing crisis for the welfare of Filipino families across the nation.
