Senators Support President Marcos’ Call for Unity and Reconciliation
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. earned widespread approval from senators after expressing his willingness to reconcile with the Dutertes. This move highlights a significant call to set aside political differences and focus on serving the Filipino people’s needs.
One senator remarked, “Sang-ayon ako sa panawagan ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos na isantabi ang pulitika at ituon ang pansin sa mga pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan (I agree with President Bongbong Marcos’ call to set aside politics and focus on the needs of our people).” The Senate leader emphasized, “Tama po sya (he is right); our country’s leaders cannot afford to be consumed by politics when so many of our kababayan struggle simply to make ends meet.”
This sentiment reflects the growing concern that political strife distracts from addressing urgent social issues. The President’s openness to reconciliation sends a clear message that the welfare of Filipinos must come before personal or partisan conflicts.
The Importance of Prioritizing National Welfare Over Political Differences
According to sources close to the matter, the President’s humility in recognizing the public’s weariness from political conflict is commendable. “In admitting that he is open to reconciling with the Vice President and the Duterte family, he reminds us that the welfare of the Filipino people should always take precedence over personal differences and partisan disputes,” one official stated.
The message is clear: now is the time to build bridges, not burn them. As expressed, “Malinaw po ang mensahe ni Presidente (The President’s message is clear): now is the time to build bridges, not burn them. We owe it to our people to rise above division and do better—together—for the sake of our nation.”
Another senator echoed this view, expressing concerns about the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte, suggesting it may hinder national unity. “By expressing his desire to reconcile with the Dutertes, the President demonstrates his intent to rise above political bickering and focus on national healing and progress,” the senator shared.
As the President said, now that the elections are over, the mudslinging is over, it is better for us elected officials to focus our attention on the real work of government – building the nation for the good of all).”
Balancing Governance with Integrity and Due Process
Despite calls for reconciliation, some senators reminded that they are constitutionally obliged to act on impeachment complaints with integrity and due process. “The Filipino people deserve nothing less than a Senate that upholds integrity, objectivity, and respect for due process,” a Senate member affirmed.
Meanwhile, an incoming senator praised President Marcos’ kindness and leadership style, noting that his humility is sometimes mistaken for weakness. “Very typical of PBBM as a person. His kindness and the goodness of his heart in dealing with people are being interpreted by both his allies and adversaries as a weakness of his leadership,” the senator said.
Nonetheless, this leader suggested that the President might benefit from a strong but well-intentioned cabinet member capable of enforcing discipline and promoting good governance. “Three years remaining in his term is still a long, enough time to make adjustments along this line,” the senator added.
Rule of Law and Forward-Looking Governance
Another lawmaker highlighted that President Marcos exemplifies the ideal attitude of a national leader, focusing on progress and unity. “Whether others will also change their attitude is already beyond the control of the President,” the official noted.
The same lawmaker stressed the importance of adhering to the rule of law: “Regarding ‘processes’ in government, the best frame of mind (or ‘attitude’) is for the Rule of Law. Sundin lang kung ano ang naka lagay sa batas (let’s just follow what is stated in the law) both substance and procedure.”
Furthermore, another senator concurred with the President’s idea of reconciliation, underscoring that political divisions have only held the country back. “We’ve been saying this too ever since, that early political bickerings and rifts have done nothing but hold us back. Napag-iiwanan na tayo ng mga karatig nating bansa (We’ve been left behind by our neighbors),” the senator said.
He urged leaders to prioritize pressing national problems and work together to move the country forward. “We have so many pressing problems that need us to work together and stay focused. I hope we can just prioritize the country’s current challenges. If we join forces, we can help our people and our country move forward,” he stressed.
