Senior Citizens PWDs Get 50 Percent Train Fare Discount Starting July 16
Metro Manila’s senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) can now enjoy a 50 percent train fare discount on all three major rail lines beginning July 16. This new benefit aims to ease the daily commute expenses of these vulnerable groups.
The expanded fare discount program was officially launched by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the MRT-3 Santolan-Annapolis station in Quezon City. This initiative coincides with the 47th National Disability Week, observed from July 17 to 23, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting PWDs and seniors.
Expanded Discounts to Benefit Millions of Commuters
Earlier in June, a similar 50-percent discount was introduced for students, aligning with the president’s directive to reduce financial burdens on key commuter groups. “Our students, persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens truly need our help because their income is very limited. That’s why we thought of this program as something we can do to support our commuters who are PWDs and senior citizens,” President Marcos said during the launch.
This enhanced discount will impact approximately 13 million senior citizens and 7 million PWDs nationwide. It builds on the existing law that mandates a 20-percent fare reduction for students, senior citizens, and PWDs.
Government’s Continued Support for Vulnerable Commuters
The fare discount is a significant step toward making public transportation more affordable and accessible for those who need it most. Transport authorities and local officials have welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its positive effect on daily commuters’ well-being.
By extending these benefits, the government hopes to encourage greater mobility and inclusion for seniors and PWDs, helping them maintain independence and participate more fully in society.
