Seven Suspected NPA Rebels Slain in Masbate Clash
LEGAZPI CITY – Seven suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed during a fierce encounter with government forces in Uson town, Masbate, on Sunday, July 27. The clash unfolded early morning, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.
Major Frank Roldan, spokesperson for the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division, reported that the Army’s 2nd Infantry Battalion engaged the suspected NPA rebels in a 30-minute firefight at Barangay San Mateo around 6 a.m. The seven fatalities were confirmed as members of Komiteng Larangan Guerilla South, under the Sub-Regional Committee 4 of the Bicol Regional Party Committee.
Recovered Weapons and Documents
Authorities recovered several high-powered firearms at the encounter site. These included M16 rifles, two M203 grenade launchers, an M14 rifle, an M653 rifle, and a Bushmaster rifle. Personal belongings and documents linked to the rebels were also seized, sources said.
Despite the intense firefight, government troops reported no casualties. The operation underscores the ongoing efforts of the military to dismantle insurgent groups in the Bicol region.
Local leaders noted the significance of the encounter in curbing rebel activities, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between the community and security forces.
