Severe Tropical Storm Crising Causes Deadly Floods Nationwide

Severe Tropical Storm Crising Devastates the Philippines

The combined impact of Severe Tropical Storm Crising, the southwest monsoon known locally as “habagat,” and a low-pressure area has triggered widespread flooding and destruction across the Philippines. These weather disturbances have already resulted in six fatalities and left eight people missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The severe tropical storm caused heavy rains that paralyzed daily life, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate their homes. Local officials confirmed that five individuals have also sustained injuries, but these numbers may still be updated as rescue efforts continue.

Millions Affected and Thousands Displaced

The NDRRMC reported that approximately 1.3 million people, or 370,693 families, have been impacted nationwide. Of these, 107,983 individuals have been displaced due to rising floodwaters and damaged homes.

Currently, 12,328 families (about 42,355 people) are taking refuge in 464 evacuation centers, while another 14,636 families (65,628 individuals) have sought shelter with relatives or in other safe locations. This large displacement highlights the storm’s severe toll on communities.

Infrastructure Damage and Flooded Areas

Authorities also reported that 194 road sections and 12 bridges have been affected, with 53 roads and eight bridges rendered impassable, disrupting transportation and rescue operations.

Flooding has been recorded in at least 467 locations spanning multiple regions, including Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen, Caraga, Metro Manila, and the Negros Island Region.

Related Incidents Amplify Disaster Impact

Besides flooding, officials noted 47 related incidents such as landslides, collapsed structures, fallen debris, maritime accidents, storm surges, tornadoes, destructive winds, rockfalls, and drownings. These events further complicate rescue and relief efforts.

Local leaders emphasize the urgent need for continued vigilance as the weather system persists. Evacuation efforts and emergency responses remain active to assist affected communities and prevent further loss.
