Severe Tropical Storm Crising Triggers Flood Alert in Manila

Flood Alert Issued Amid Severe Tropical Storm Crising

Manila residents faced significant flooding on Saturday as Severe Tropical Storm Crising, combined with the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat, brought heavy rains to the region. Authorities promptly issued a flood alert to warn motorists and residents about hazardous road conditions caused by rising waters.

The flood alert highlighted the increasing threat of water accumulation in key Metro Manila areas, urging the public to exercise caution. The severe tropical storm’s impact, coupled with the continuous downpour from the habagat, intensified flooding across several cities.

Flood Situation Across Metro Manila Cities

As of 2:30 p.m., the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported the following flood conditions:

Valenzuela City
At 11:40 a.m., streets in Maysan and Paso De Blas near NLEX Bagbaguin became impassable to light vehicles. Floodwaters reached half-tire depth (10-13 inches) at key points such as in front of PLDT Maysan and along Rincon Road near Dali Store heading to both Malinta and Pasolo.

Earlier, at 10:26 a.m., the junction of G. Araneta and NS Amoranto was completely blocked to all vehicle types. Meanwhile, C3 Balintawak remained passable to all vehicles despite half-tire deep flooding as of 9:30 a.m.

Pasay City
At 9:07 a.m., Tramo Southbound in Barangay 185 near NAIA Terminal 3 experienced gutter-deep flooding but remained passable to all vehicles.

City of Manila
Multiple locations reported gutter-deep floods generally around 8 inches. These included Abad Santos Avenue corner Antipolo Street at 9:46 a.m. and UN Avenue Service Road at 8:42 a.m., with roads still passable. Early morning flooding was also noted from Padre Faura to UN Station and around Taft Avenue, including the intersection with Padre Faura and near the National Bureau of Investigation.

Mandaluyong City
The EDSA Shaw Tunnel northbound was gutter deep at 8 inches as of 4:45 a.m., yet remained accessible to all vehicles.

Navotas City
Floodwaters in San Jose at M. Naval corner E. Tuazon Streets had subsided by 2:10 p.m., though previously above gutter deep (9 inches), with roads still open to all vehicles.

Weather Updates and Storm Movement

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued a yellow rainfall warning for Metro Manila at 2 p.m., signaling expected rainfall between 7.5 to 15 millimeters within the next three hours. This indicates moderate rain that could exacerbate flooding conditions.

Additionally, Pagasa’s 11 a.m. bulletin confirmed that Crising intensified into a severe tropical storm as it left the Philippine area of responsibility. The storm was last tracked 235 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes, moving west-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour. It carried winds up to 100 kilometers per hour with gusts reaching 125 kilometers per hour.

Local officials and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions amid the ongoing flooding risks.
