Severe Tropical Storm Crising Triggers Rockslide in Baguio City
BAGUIO CITY — Heavy rains and powerful winds caused by Severe Tropical Storm Crising led to dangerous rockslides in Baguio City on Saturday, July 19. A massive boulder broke free from a mountainside and crashed onto a house and a parked vehicle along Kennon Road in Barangay Camp 7, local officials reported.
The Baguio City Public Information Office, citing updates from disaster management authorities, said the boulder struck the property around 1:15 p.m. Fortunately, no residents were injured as they had evacuated earlier. However, the impact tragically killed a pet dog inside the house.
Immediate Response and Damage Assessment
Barangay officials, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and the Baguio City District Engineering Office quickly responded to secure the area and prevent further harm. They conducted a thorough assessment of the damage caused by the rockslide.
As of 4 p.m., the Department of Public Works and Highways in the Cordillera region confirmed that Kennon Road remains closed. Continuous rockfalls near the rockshed entrance have made the road impassable. Clearing operations and safety evaluations are ongoing to restore access safely.
