Severe Tropical Storm Podul Tracks Westward Near PAR
Severe Tropical Storm Podul continues to maintain its strength as it moves westward outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), officials reported Sunday afternoon. The state weather bureau closely monitors the storm’s path and intensity, emphasizing the importance of preparedness as it approaches the country.
According to the 5 p.m. advisory, weather specialist Charmagne Varilla said Podul was positioned approximately 1,595 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon at 3 p.m. The storm carried sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 135 kph, and was progressing westward at a speed of 20 kph.
Storm Expected to Enter Philippine Area of Responsibility Soon
Varilla explained, “It will continue to move westward until it enters the Philippine area of responsibility later or tomorrow morning. Once it enters PAR, it may strengthen and reach the typhoon category.” Community members were advised to stay alert as Podul, which will be named “Goryo,” is set to become the second tropical cyclone to enter the country this month.
Local leaders noted that the storm’s westward course is influenced by a high-pressure area located in eastern Japan, which affects its trajectory.
Projected Path and Possible Impact on Northern Luzon
Podul is forecasted to shift northward or west-northwestward by Tuesday, with expectations to exit the PAR by Wednesday night or early Thursday. The tropical cyclone may also pass over Taiwan before making landfall in eastern China.
Officials reported that if Podul deviates from its current track, strong winds could affect parts of Batanes, prompting residents to remain vigilant and prepare for adverse weather conditions.
Southwest Monsoon Brings Rain to Western Luzon
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, continues to bring scattered rain showers over western Luzon. However, Varilla assured that areas including the Ilocos Region, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands are expected to experience fair weather on Monday.
Community members are encouraged to monitor weather updates and heed local advisories as the situation develops.
