Siargao Airport Expansion Construction Kicks Off
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has confirmed that construction of the expanded passenger terminal building at Siargao Airport will officially begin on August 8. This project aims to significantly upgrade the airport’s capacity and improve the overall experience for both local and foreign tourists.
The new terminal is designed to triple the airport’s current daily passenger capacity, a crucial upgrade to support the growing number of visitors to this popular island destination. According to sources, this improvement aligns with government efforts to boost tourism and ensure smoother travel for everyone.
“Our Tourists Deserve Better,” Says Secretary Dizon
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the importance of enhancing tourist facilities. In his own words, “Our tourists, both domestic and foreign, deserve better.” He added, “That’s why the president has directed us to improve the experience of local and foreign tourists in Siargao, because this is a very important tourist destination.”
Capacity Upgrade and PPP Partnership
Currently, Siargao Airport handles around 200 passengers daily. Once the terminal expansion is complete, it is expected to accommodate at least 750 passengers each day. This substantial increase will help reduce congestion and improve the flow of travelers arriving and departing from the island.
The airport expansion is part of a bundled unsolicited proposal submitted by major private groups under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement. This package also includes modernization efforts for the Davao and Bicol airports, signaling a broader push to upgrade key transportation hubs across the country.
Government Commitment to Tourism Infrastructure
Secretary Dizon assured that the current administration remains dedicated to fast-tracking vital infrastructure projects in key tourism areas. These efforts support the government’s goal to revive and strengthen the local economy by improving connectivity and accessibility.
“The Marcos administration continues to prioritize infrastructure projects in tourism hotspots,” local officials noted, highlighting the strategic importance of such developments in boosting economic growth and travel convenience.
