Six PH Seafarers Attacked by Houthi Rebels Safely Return
Six Filipino crew members of the MV Magic Seas, a ship attacked by Houthi rebels off the coast of Yemen, have safely returned to the Philippines, local officials confirmed. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported the safe homecoming of the seafarers, emphasizing their well-being after the dangerous incident.
Three of the seafarers landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 around 4:30 p.m., while the other three arrived at Clark International Airport at 4 p.m. The DMW ensured the crew received immediate assistance upon arrival.
Government Provides Financial and Medical Aid
In support of the seafarers, the government extended financial aid packages. Each crew member received ₱75,000 from DMW’s AKSYON Fund and the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) Emergency Repatriation Fund. Additionally, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) granted ₱10,000 each. Medical teams from the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) conducted health check-ups to guarantee their physical condition was stable.
Local sources noted, “The seafarers were provided a safety net in the form of financial assistance and health support immediately upon arrival.” This comprehensive aid aims to help the crew recover swiftly from the ordeal.
Ensuring Safe Return and Reintegration
Following their arrival, the seafarers were accommodated in hotels courtesy of OWWA. Transportation assistance was also arranged to facilitate their safe return to their families and communities. The government reassured the public that it will continue supporting their reintegration and provide further assistance as needed.
The MV Magic Seas, a Liberia-flagged bulk carrier, carried 19 crew members, including 17 Filipinos, one Romanian, and one Vietnamese. The ship was attacked while sailing approximately 51 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah, Yemen, last Sunday.
Local leaders noted the government’s commitment to the welfare of overseas Filipino workers, especially those facing dangers abroad. This incident highlights the risks Filipino seafarers encounter and the importance of swift government intervention.
