Soldiers in South Cotabato Recover 17 Explosives
Soldiers in South Cotabato recovered 17 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) believed to have been planted by communist rebels, preventing a possible attack in the province, officials reported on Thursday. This significant find was the result of swift action following community reports, highlighting the critical role of local cooperation in security efforts.
Troops from the Army’s 105th Infantry Battalion acted on tips from residents and members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) regarding suspicious items in Sitio Bagong Silang, Barangay Maan, Tboli town, on Wednesday afternoon. The early detection of these devices helped avert a potential tragedy in the area.
Details of the Explosive Device Recovery
During their search, the soldiers uncovered 16 anti-personnel mines along with an additional explosive device. These were found along an abandoned road leading to Lake Maughan, according to the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID). The discovery confirms ongoing threats posed by insurgent groups in the region.
Brig. Gen. Michael Santos, commander of the 603rd Infantry Brigade, expressed gratitude toward the local community. He said, “The information they provided prevented a possible tragic incident that could have claimed many lives.” This statement underscores the power of community vigilance in countering rebel activities.
Link to Communist Rebel Group
Authorities linked the recovered explosives to Guerrilla Front 72 of the Communist Party of the Philippines–New People’s Army. The group is reportedly led by a commander known as “Gawets.” This connection sheds light on the ongoing insurgency challenges faced by security forces in South Cotabato.
Maj. Gen. Donald Gumiran, commander of the 6ID and Joint Task Force Central, emphasized in a statement the importance of collaboration between communities and military forces. He noted that the recovery of the explosives highlights how coordinated efforts are vital in preventing rebel attacks and maintaining peace.
Community Cooperation Crucial in Security
Local leaders and community members have played an essential role by reporting suspicious activities promptly. Their involvement has strengthened the military’s ability to respond effectively and maintain public safety.
With the ongoing threat of insurgent attacks, such cooperation remains a key pillar in the province’s defense strategy. Officials continue to encourage residents to stay vigilant and report any unusual behavior or items to authorities immediately.
