South Korean Fugitive Arrested in Pasay City
Authorities in the Philippines have apprehended a South Korean national wanted in his home country for kidnapping. The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested Jang Seongwoong, 47, in Pasay City as part of their ongoing efforts to detain individuals listed as undesirable aliens. The arrest was made under a deportation warrant issued due to Jang’s inclusion on the bureau’s blacklist since 2021.
Jang’s name has been on the Bureau of Immigration’s wanted list for deportation for several years. He first arrived in the Philippines on May 1, 2017, but overstayed his visa. Officials noted that the arrest came after they acted on a red notice from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) issued in July 2019.
Details of the Kidnapping Charges
Before the Interpol notice, a local court in South Korea issued a warrant for Jang’s arrest. Reports indicate that the Daegu district court charged him with serious physical injury and kidnapping. According to local sources, Jang and his accomplices detained and violently assaulted a victim who owed them gambling debts. The victim suffered multiple injuries after being beaten with a baseball bat.
The Bureau of Immigration’s Fugitive Search Unit (BI-FSU) carried out the arrest on May 22. Since then, Jang has been held at the BI detention facility in Taguig City, awaiting deportation proceedings. Officials emphasized that Jang is now permanently banned from re-entering the Philippines, ensuring he cannot evade justice by returning.
Ongoing Efforts to Deport Undesirable Aliens
This arrest highlights the Bureau of Immigration’s commitment to enforcing laws against foreigners who violate visa rules or commit crimes while in the country. The agency continues to monitor and detain individuals with pending deportation orders, especially those flagged by international law enforcement agencies.
Local experts say that cooperation with Interpol and other international organizations strengthens the Philippines’ ability to track fugitives and uphold public safety. The BI reminds foreign nationals to comply with immigration laws to avoid similar consequences.
