South Korean Government Donates Two Metric Tons Rice to Support Philippines
The South Korean government’s generous donation of two metric tons rice to the Philippines highlights the strong and enduring bilateral relationship between the two nations. Leyte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez emphasized that this rice donation boosts the Philippines’ efforts to aid those affected by recent natural disasters.
Romualdez shared in a statement that the Korean Embassy in the Philippines announced its rice donation to help the government’s disaster response after millions of Filipinos were impacted by three consecutive cyclones and the southwest monsoon. This gesture underscores the spirit of Asian solidarity and community.
“South Korea’s heartwarming donation is proof of its strong ties with the Philippines and its selflessness to look out for its neighbors in Asia – a reflection of Asian values of unity and community,” Romualdez said. He added, “The Philippines and its people are truly grateful for the helping hand that Seoul extended to us in our time of need. It would boost our government’s efforts to extend assistance to many of our kababayans affected by the floods.”
Proper Use and Allocation of Donated Rice
Romualdez assured that the current administration under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will use the donated rice as intended. He said, “This donated rice will be used in delivering aid to disaster victims and providing access to affordable food in our most vulnerable communities. This is how the Philippines repays the kindness of its allies and neighbors: by bringing the aid it receives to people and places that need it the most.”
According to local sources, the 2,016 metric tons rice will be officially handed over to Philippine authorities in August in Manila. Of this amount, 1,616 metric tons will be distributed to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, while the remaining 400 metric tons will support the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Complementing Food Security Initiatives
This generous donation is expected to complement the Marcos administration’s “Benteng Bigas, Meron Na!” initiative, which aims to strengthen food security in the country. It represents a valuable step toward achieving the government’s goal of ensuring accessible and affordable rice for all Filipinos.
Earlier this year, South Korea also donated 4,000 metric tons or 100,000 bags of rice to assist the Philippines during Tropical Storm Kristine relief operations, underscoring the sustained partnership and support between the two countries.
