Armed Robbery Incident Raises Alarm in BGC Area
Two South Korean nationals were recently victims of an armed robbery in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Barangay Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. According to reports from sources familiar with the matter, the incident took place around 11:40 p.m. on May 17 along 9th Avenue, just in front of One Park Drive. Four assailants on two motorcycles confronted the victims at gunpoint, stealing valuables such as a luxury bag and cash before escaping the scene.
Authorities and community leaders have expressed concern over the event, especially since the BGC area has been generally considered a safe zone. The robbery is part of a troubling rise in armed robberies happening across Metro Manila, including in Pasay, Makati, and Malate. The recent trend shows that these crimes occur regardless of time or location, heightening public anxiety.
Police Investigation and Response Efforts
The Southern Police District (SPD) has confirmed that Taguig police are actively seeking justice for the victims. They conducted an extensive investigation utilizing CCTV footage and fieldwork in nearby locations. As a result, the police identified several suspects through surveillance videos and a rogue gallery. The victims positively identified these individuals during a lineup presentation.
A formal robbery case was filed on May 21 with the Taguig City Prosecutor’s Office. Police are continuing operations to apprehend the remaining suspects. The SPD reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and safety throughout BGC and the entire Taguig area. They also thanked the victims for their cooperation and urged everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.
Measures to Protect Korean Nationals
On May 22, representatives from the Korean Embassy in the Philippines met with officials from the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission and the Philippine National Police to discuss additional protective measures for Korean citizens residing or traveling in the country. South Korean visitors represent the largest group of tourists in the Philippines, which makes their safety a priority.
Following the meeting, the Philippine National Police increased the deployment of tourist police officers in popular tourist spots and areas with significant Korean populations. Officers equipped with basic Korean language skills are now assigned to provide better assistance and quicker responses to incidents involving Korean nationals.
Local authorities are also collaborating with community leaders to enhance public safety infrastructure. Plans include installing more CCTV cameras, improving street lighting, and adding speed bumps in strategic locations to deter criminal activities.
The coordinated efforts aim to restore confidence among visitors and residents alike, ensuring that areas like BGC remain secure and welcoming for everyone.
