Enhanced Safety for South Korean Visitors in the Philippines
The rising influx of South Korean visitors, the Philippines’ largest foreign tourist group, has triggered the Department of Tourism (DOT) to strengthen security measures. Ensuring the protection of South Korean visitors remains a top priority for the Philippine government amid increasing tourist numbers.
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco emphasized that the government is working closely with various agencies to enhance tourist safety. She also supports establishing a National Task Force on Tourist Safety to tackle growing concerns surrounding visitor security.
South Korean travelers continue to top the list of foreign tourists, with over 1.57 million arrivals recorded in 2024. These visitors contribute an impressive USD 2.3 billion to the local economy, according to recent DOT estimates. “Any crime against tourists must be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” Frasco declared, highlighting that such crimes harm not only victims but also the livelihoods dependent on tourism.
Collaboration with Community and Security Agencies
Frasco recently met with representatives from the United Korean Community Association, Inc. (UKCA) to reaffirm the government’s commitment to protecting South Korean nationals. Through the Tourism-Oriented Police for Community Order and Protection (TOPCOP) program, the DOT teams up with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and other key agencies.
This joint effort focuses on securing popular tourist spots by deploying over 8,600 trained tourist police officers nationwide. Security coverage has expanded to include barangay tanods and intelligence units, especially in remote areas. Plans are underway to increase Tourist Police Units, Assistance Centers, and Desks, alongside specialized Korean language training for officers to better communicate with visitors.
Local Government Role and Promotional Efforts
Local governments are urged to maintain strong police presence in areas frequented by South Korean tourists to deter crime and enhance safety. At the same time, the DOT is ramping up promotional initiatives, including Korean-speaking agents manning the Tourist Assistance Call Center and joint campaigns with travel partners.
The appointment of South Korean actor Seo In Guk as Philippine Tourism Ambassador further strengthens ties and promotes the country as a safe and attractive destination. Improving connectivity to key tourist hubs such as Cebu, Clark, and Bohol remains a priority to ensure smooth travel experiences for foreign visitors.
Together, these comprehensive efforts aim to create a secure and welcoming environment for South Korean visitors as their numbers continue to grow.
