Southwest Monsoon and Severe Tropical Storm Crising Relief Efforts Expand

Churches Open Doors Amid Southwest Monsoon and Severe Tropical Storm Crising

MANILA – Churches in two dioceses have opened their doors to evacuees affected by the ongoing southwest monsoon and Severe Tropical Storm Crising. Those impacted by the heavy rains and flooding are encouraged to seek refuge in designated church shelters, local leaders said.

The dioceses of Malolos and Cubao, in separate announcements on Tuesday, emphasized their commitment to assist flood victims. They urged affected families to take shelter in several churches located in vulnerable areas.

Malolos Diocese Offers Shelter to Flood Victims

In Bulacan province, the Diocese of Malolos identified churches in low-lying towns such as Marilao, Guiguinto, Meycauayan, Bocaue, Calumpit, Santa Maria, Hagonoy, Valenzuela, and Malolos city itself as temporary safe havens. These churches welcome individuals seeking shelter from the rising floodwaters.

Cubao Diocese Provides Safe Havens

Meanwhile, the Cubao Diocese recommended evacuees to head to Holy Family Parish – Roxas and San Antonio de Padua Parish. These locations are prepared to accommodate those displaced by the heavy rains.

Caritas Philippines Launches Local Donation Drive

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ social arm, Caritas Philippines, is preparing to launch a local emergency appeal through the Alay Kapwa Solidarity Fund. This initiative aims to support communities devastated by the combined impact of the storm and monsoon rains.

“This appeal will be announced during the televised daily Mass to mobilize immediate assistance for communities affected,” sources said. Caritas Philippines is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with local dioceses to assess needs in real time.

They highlighted urgent requirements, including food supplies, thermal kits, hygiene kits, and dignity kits. These items are critical to help families cope with the aftermath of the flooding.

Continuous Monitoring and Updates

Ongoing assessments are being conducted by affected dioceses. Information is shared promptly through social media and communication groups to ensure timely support and updates reach those in need.

Widespread Impact of Floods and Storm

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the combined effects of Severe Tropical Storm Crising and the southwest monsoon have affected 362,465 families—over 1.2 million individuals—across 2,088 villages in 17 regions nationwide.

These numbers highlight the urgent need for community support and coordinated relief efforts as the country continues to face severe weather conditions.
