Southwest Monsoon Brings Heavy Rain in Philippines
MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon, known locally as the habagat, will cause overcast skies and widespread rain showers across the Philippines this Sunday, sources said. This weather pattern will affect most parts of the country, bringing steady rainfall to many regions.
Heavy rains are expected, especially in the western parts of Luzon, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, and the western Visayas, according to morning forecasts. These areas should prepare for significant downpours throughout the day.
Cloudy Skies and Scattered Showers Elsewhere
Weather officials reported, “We also expect cloudy skies with scattered rains, particularly over the rest of Luzon and Visayas, as well as parts of the Zamboanga Peninsula and the areas of Northern Mindanao and Caraga.” They added, “As for the rest of Mindanao, isolated rain showers and thunderstorms are likely.”
Gale Warnings Issued Due to Inclement Weather
Due to the rough weather conditions, gale warnings have been issued for several coastal areas. These include Ilocos Norte; the western coast of Pangasinan, covering Bolinao, Bani, Agno, Burgos, and Dasol; Zambales; and the Lubang Islands. Fishermen and residents in these locations are advised to exercise caution.
Monitoring Tropical Cyclone Activity
Authorities also stated there are currently no low-pressure areas being monitored inside or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). However, they noted the possibility of a tropical cyclone developing within the PAR in the coming days or weeks of July.
Currently, Tropical Storm Crising is outside the PAR and was last located approximately 655 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes, moving toward western China.
