Southwest Monsoon Brings Heavy Rains Across Philippines
MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon continues to bring widespread rain across the country, state weather experts confirmed Monday. This southwest monsoon impact will dominate the weather in many regions, even as a new low-pressure area (LPA) forms far from land.
According to sources, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported at 4:00 a.m. that the southwest monsoon will cause occasional rains in Metro Manila and several provinces including the Ilocos Region, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Oriental Mindoro. Meanwhile, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro will also experience monsoon rains.
Widespread Rain and Thunderstorms Expected
Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast across the Visayas, the rest of Luzon, the Zamboanga Peninsula, and Northern Mindanao. “The thick clouds seen in our satellite image are caused by the southwest monsoon,” a weather specialist explained during the forecast.
In contrast, the rest of Mindanao is expected to see improving weather conditions, although isolated thunderstorms may still occur. This presents some relief for areas that have experienced persistent rain in recent days.
New Low-Pressure Area Far from Philippines
A newly formed low-pressure area located 1,140 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon is unlikely to directly affect the country in the next 24 hours. It formed at the eastern edge of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and is expected to move northward over the coming days.
Experts said the LPA will remain well away from the Philippines, so no direct impact is expected at this time. Instead, the continuous southwest monsoon will remain the main weather concern in the days ahead.
