Southwest Monsoon Brings Widespread Rain Showers
Overcast skies and a high chance of rain showers will dominate the western parts of the Philippines this Sunday because of the southwest monsoon, locally called habagat, sources said. The southwest monsoon is expected to affect key areas across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), habagat will bring cloudy skies and frequent rains to the western sections of Luzon, including provinces like Pangasinan, Bataan, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, and even Metro Manila. Most of the Visayas region will also experience similar weather conditions.
Regions Affected by Southwest Monsoon
“We expect cloudy skies with more chance of rain over the Western part of Luzon, including Pangasinan, Bataan, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Metro Manila, and most of Visayas,” said Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina in Filipino.
He also highlighted that the western parts of Mindanao will feel the impact, covering the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Zamboanga Peninsula, and Soccsksargen provinces such as South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City.
Localized Storms Elsewhere, No Tropical Cyclone Threat
While the southwest monsoon influences western regions, the rest of the country will experience localized thunderstorms. Despite these weather disturbances, Pagasa is not currently tracking any low-pressure areas inside or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility that might develop into tropical cyclones.
“This means we are not yet monitoring anything that could turn into a tropical cyclone,” Badrina confirmed. Additionally, there are no gale warnings issued for any of the country’s coastal waters.
