Southwest Monsoon Brings Rains Across Philippines
Rains continue to fall over many parts of the Philippines as the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, remains active, weather authorities reported Sunday. This southwest monsoon is causing wet conditions and scattered showers in various regions.
According to the state weather bureau, Tropical Storm Nari, which is currently located 2,165 kilometers east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon, remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). The storm is not expected to have any direct impact on the country.
Tropical Storm Nari’s Status and Movement
The tropical storm packs maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching up to 80 kilometers per hour. It is moving east-northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. Local weather officials emphasized that Nari will not enter the PAR and therefore poses no immediate threat to the Philippines.
Meanwhile, meteorologists are closely watching a cluster of clouds east of Mindanao. This system could potentially develop into a low-pressure area (LPA) within the coming days, which may influence weather conditions in the southern parts of the country.
Areas Affected by Southwest Monsoon
Palawan is expected to experience intermittent rains due to the southwest monsoon, raising concerns about possible flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas. Other regions such as Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and the rest of MIMAROPA will see mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.
Similarly, Metro Manila and other parts of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms possible throughout the day.
Precautionary Measures and Alerts
Authorities continue to urge the public and local disaster risk reduction offices to stay vigilant, especially in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas. Residents in these vulnerable locations should prepare accordingly and monitor updates from official sources.
