Southwest Monsoon Death Toll Climbs Amid Cyclone Impact
The death toll from the combined impact of the southwest monsoon and three tropical cyclones has reached 40, authorities reported. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) continues to reconcile data from local sources as casualties rise.
Nine fatalities occurred in Metro Manila, while Calabarzon provinces — Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon — recorded eight deaths. Western Visayas accounted for six fatalities.
Regional Fatalities and Missing Persons
The Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Negros Island Region, and Northern Mindanao each reported three deaths. Central Luzon saw two fatalities, while Mimaropa, the Davao Region, and the Caraga Region each reported one death. Additionally, eight individuals remain missing, and 33 others suffered injuries.
Extensive Damage from Southwest Monsoon and Cyclones
Infrastructure damage has soared to an estimated P15.4 billion, and agricultural losses are pegged at P2.9 billion. The recent storms, including tropical cyclones Crising (Wipha), Dante (Francisco), and Emong (Co-may), have aggravated the southwest monsoon, causing widespread devastation.
These weather events have torn off roofs, uprooted trees, toppled concrete electric posts, flooded streets, and destroyed crops across many affected areas. Despite a declared “monsoon break” expected to last several days, authorities warn that the situation remains critical.
Local leaders noted the ongoing challenges in relief and recovery efforts as communities cope with the aftermath. Continued monitoring and coordinated response remain vital to prevent further loss.
